GIBSONVILLE, N.C. -- Students will not return this year to Eastern Guilford High School, where a fire that began in an empty classroom Wednesday injured three firefighters, officials said.
"We have serious questions about the structural integrity of that building after this fire," said Guilford County schools Superintendent Terry Grier, who planned to meet Wednesday night with other school officials to decide what happens next.
"Those kids will not go back to school there this year, there's no question," he said."
One firefighter was treated at the scene, while two others went to a hospital, said Mike Wright, deputy director of operations for Guilford County EMS. By Wednesday night, firefighters were not being sent into the school because it was too dangerous, he said.
One wall had collapsed at the school, which about 1,060 students attend. They, along with teachers and other school employees, were evacuated Wednesday to a nearby church.
The fire started in a classroom that was supposed to be empty, the News & Record of Greensboro reported on its Web site. A teacher tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher, but was unable to do so, Grier said.
Chris Caudill, 16, said he was eating his lunch at the high school when he heard the fire alarm.
"At first, it seemed like a joke," Caudill said, adding that he soon fled the building.
The chairman of the Guilford County Board of Education, Alan Duncan, plans to meet with Eastern Guilford students at 6 a.m. Thursday in front of the board's office. School officials will meet at 7:30 a.m. to discuss options for the students.
The school board plans to hold an emergency school board meeting at 11 a.m. Friday.
That was my high school.
Well technically I Think they rebuilt my high school, and turned my school into the middle school. I might have to look this one up. Oh man.
Edit: No, the new school is the middle school. That WAS my high school :(
Oh my god, that's like looking at the Titanic's pics. That part that burned down was the auditorium, the cafeteria would have been just left of that.
