Maya @ 03:26 pm

I'm going to need to get my hands on a copy of Maya in the near future. And it seems like to buy it new is $3400. Does anyone know if Maya can be bought legally with the same upgrade trick as Photoshop (Buy old version at discount, buy new upgrade)? Or does anyone have access to getting me a copy for cheaper? I want it to be legal so no student versions or pirated copies please.

Is this for The new Mesh features in SL? Is there any alternative to Maya that might be cheaper, or is there a specific reason you want to work in Maya?

Daz 3D? Blender? Zbrush? Carrara? Lightwave?

Maya is kind of stupidly over priced. ( edit: So is Cinema 4D and 3DS max, dear gods...)

Lightwave I understand is one of Maya's closest competitors and it is 1,495$ new.
Daz Studio 4 Pro is 429$
Zbrush is 699$
Carrara 8 Pro is 549$

Blender is free.

No, I wish it was for SL at least they give you options. This is for something that requires you use Maya or 3DSMax to upload art assets. Hit me up on SL or gtalk sometime and I'll give you specifics.

I was hoping to get Zbrush for messing with mesh since it's not ungodly expensive.

What type of assets are you trying to upload? Blender I think was made for game design. You require .Fbx? .Obj?

Upgrades to 2010 are about $1,745.00 from Autodesk.com

I'm not exactly sure what the deal is, but this thing I'm working with doesn't allow FBX support. You have to convert the files through maya or max in order to upload them. I don't have the specific info as to why, but that's one of the requirements.

Too bad you couldn't get more info. Most places only know of those two, which is why they suggest it.
The blender developers have been pretty impressive about making a competitive program.

Maya's my favorite. Unfortunately I can't extend a license from mine.

Ebay might be the best option for ya.
