To get a little more indepth about the S10, I haven't had the oil changed since June 2012, I used Mobile 1 Synthetic. I've only driven it about 1000 miles. The oil is still mostly transparent, but a light honey color right now. There's no significant leaking. I'm wondering if the oil breaks down over time and I should get it changed, or just leave it until it starts showing signs of wear. I have no idea how long oil is supposed to last.

I'm about to take it on a trip to the mountains so I just need to know if I should get the oil changed now, or if I don't need to worry about it.

Synthetics last longer than regular oil. My rule of thumb is double. It was golden when it went in so if it's still clear and the same color, you are probably okay.

My boyfriend is a mechanic and states that you should change it. He says that oil viscosity starts to break down after 6 months. Synthetic is rated to last 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Beyond that you risk your motor seizing [which he knows from experience because it happened to him one time].

If I may also make a recommendation, Mobil 1 is more or less high priced junk as far as oil goes. Use a different brand when you do get an oil change.
